As I sat down to write this blog I started thinking back to when Chris and I first decided we were going to "try" and have a baby. It was an exciting time for us. After a year of trying with no success, the excitment was starting to go away. I was reading over an old blog entry I had written on November 13, 2008. It talks about the stuff that we went through trying to get pregnant. The title of the blog was "Tested, but Choosing to be Hopeful". The blog read like this:
As most of you know by now, Chris and I have been trying to conceive for a year now with no success. I really never thought it would be this hard. I guess I just thought as soon as you were ready to have a child, you stop your birth control and next thing you know you are pregnant. Not for us....
In March of this year I found out that I have an under active thyroid and the doctor diagnosed me with Hypothyroidism. He started me on a very low dose of snythroid. I was a little nervous about starting this medication because I didn't know a lot about it. I talked to my doctor and she told me it might actually help our chances of getting pregnant. I didn't realize if your thyroid levels were not within the normal range, it can affect you getting pregnant. After a month of being on the medication, my thyroid levels were within the normal range! I thought now that my levels were in the normal range, surely we would get pregnant. Nope...
Chris and I met with my OBGYN in September 2008 for infertility. She suggested I get a HSP scan done. This is a scan of the uterus and fallopian tubes. I went and had this test done at Baptist hospital. It was painful! The test results came back and the scan showed that my uterus and tubes appeared normal. But, they did notice something that looked like calcium deposits. They were not sure of the location of the deposits. My doctor then recommended me getting a Pelvic Ultra Sound to determine where the deposits were located. After the Pelvic Ultra Sound was done, they thought it was a dermoid cyst on my left ovary. Since this was found, my doctor immediately wanted to treat this and we had to put the discussion of infertility on the back burner. I was scheduled to have the cyst removed at Baptist Hospital on October 8, 2008. The surgery didn't quite go as planned. When the doctor went in to remove the cyst, she found that it was not a cyst, but a mass on the left ovary. She was very concerned that it was cancerous. She ended up having to remove my left ovary. The test results came back benign, praise God! She also said when she tried to go in through my belly button to do the surgery, she found an umbilical hernia. She had to repair the hernia too. Also, she stated she found that I have endometriosis. I met with the doctor last week for follow up. She said she feels like Chris and I only have a "fair" chance of getting pregnant on our own. She has referred us to a doctor at Nashville Fertility to discuss our options.
It has been 5 weeks today since surgery and I am getting better every day. Chris and I have decided to keep trying on our own for at least the remainder of this year. After this year, we may meet with a doctor at Nashville Fertility to hear what they have to say and decide what to do from there.
I have been praying for over a year now for God to bless Chris and I with a child. I know that God knows the desire of my heart and I know that he will bless us with a child in his timing. I am choosing to believe that the reason we have not gotten pregnant before now is because God knew that I had this mass on my ovary and He knew that it needed to be taken care of. If Chris and I had not been trying to get pregnant, I would not have had the test done which found the mass. So, during all of this I am choosing to be thankful. I am thankful they found the mass, were able to remove it all, and the test results came back benign! I am now praying for my body to completely heal and for God to prepare my body for pregnancy. As Chris and I start trying to conceive again, I pray that God blesses us with a child in His timing, not mine. For me, that is hard to understand sometimes. But God knows what is best and I don't want to doubt His timing. I am choosing to be hopeful and believing that God will answer my prayers.
Little did I know that I would get pregnant in November of 2008. WOW!! I am so thankful that God answered our prayers. Logan Bradley Cusson was born on August 11, 2009. What a blessing!!
